The world is no longer safe, no longer thriving. It has been inherited by the diseased. The red mist spread, and humanity was infected. There was no stopping the curse once it started and the world's population was reduced to mindless beasts... Creatures that hungered and raged for the death of pure, uninfected flesh. Few of those remain. Ali is not one of them.

What a great read!! I could not put this book down; read the whole thing in a day. "After–Part 1" is an incredibly well-written story of the world after an unknown (yet) event caused humans to lose their mind and act zombie-like. The "monsters" aren't undead; they're just people who are infected with a disease and just happen to feel the need to eat humans. Ali is an impressive heroine with a special trait: she was bitten by one of the monsters but did not turn into one herself, like everyone else did. Because of that, she is able to survive on her own, in ways that the few remaining uninfected humans cannot. However, after wandering by herself for a while, living in relative safety, she decides to go looking for answers. This is part one of a three-part book, so there are many unexplained things, which I didn't mind. Can't wait for part 2!

The Phoenix Curse After Part 1 D R Johnson 9781489561046 Books Reviews
I'm a zombie buff and enjoy new and refreshing stories that inject a whole new take on the genre. D.R. Johnson does exactly that with After Part One. Well written, concise, the characters quickly draw my interest... and I have always enjoyed a strong female lead. The entire story is told in under 200 pages, so it's short and sweet. A great story can be told in just a short time, but leaves us thinking about it, creating an entire scenario around the story in our own mind after we hear it, and definitely wanting more. After Part One does all this for my own tastes and more. I loved every word, and look forward to Part Two!
Very captivating. I guess I only have one question. Where is the rest? I always wonder why some of these authors split a full book into small parts releasing a smidge at a time. It's irritating to me, especially when they are good because most of us read so many books that once the next part comes out I've been off to the races with these bits forgotten. With being able to download a sample of each book from before buying buying, a book as good as this would be purchased in a snap. I just wonder how many sales are lost releasing them this way. In my book groups, ninety percent of us all feel the same way and very seldom go back to look for the next portion. In this case it's sad because it is very apparent this author is talented. So because of her talented portrayal of her characters n their story, I give this book five stars.
In an apocalyptic world, Ali & Josh can't be sure that even those few people remaining aren't just as evil and consumed by darkness as the zombies, but there is always hope. Book gives you a strong female protagonist (which I liked), a unique twist as to characters that having survived being bitten are largely ignored by the undead, and a reduced gore level making for a very good read. Favorite passage from the book was "I held on to everything I could consider normal. It kept me sane." Ends on a cliffhanger but fortunately Book 2 & 3 are already out there.
I'll be concentrating on reviewing Halloween themed book thru the month of October for the second year running so feel free to "see all my reviews" most recently if you're of a like mind and am looking for some spooky stuff this time of year.
I read a lot of ZA fiction. A LOT. Usually I download the first free or reduced price novel and, based on that, I determine whether or not to continue the series (they hardly ever end in 1 book). I would say that 90% of the time, I never make it past the first book.
"After, Part One" is NOT one of those 90%. I will definitely be purchasing the second book and probably the third if there is one and the content continues with the same high quality as the first. It was well written (hallelujah!). The story was interesting and moved at a nice pace. Character development was done amazingly well for both the primary and secondary characters. On top of all that, the author actually provided some real originality to a genre that can and has become a little stale.
I'm definitely a fan and can't wait to read Part Two.
I NEVER give out spoilers in my reviews because the whole point is for potential readers to check out the reviews BEFORE buying the book, so without giving out any major information...
This book is pretty exciting BUT I was wavering between 3 stars and 4 stars for a couple reasons. First, the cover is not that telling and I think a great cover is important but that's a minor fault especially when inside is a great story (can't judge a book by it's cover is true but we do anyway).
Second, it took awhile for me to get into the story and invested, which is never a great sign but part of the reason is the vagueness in the start regarding the main character. It literally took me several chapters (maybe a bit less) to figure out the gender of the character.
And last, it uses a main stream, real news story as a major point of reference in which the whole plot is born. This only bothered me because I remembered the news story but felt compelled to go online and pull it up again to read, which took me away from reading the book! And I wasn't sure if I liked that it was based on such a contemporary news piece or not.
The good part is that once I got past the first chapter or so (and trolling the internet regarding the news story), the story got better and more exciting. I even downloaded part 2 to read! I eventually became truly invested in the characters and the story. The only wish is that it would start with as much of a bang as it ends with.
All in all it was enjoyable and exciting. I'm looking forward to the next part to see what happens next!
