Albert Bushnell Hart's American History Told by Contemporaries is a mammoth volume of incredible value.It combines letters from famous people such as Columbus and the Pope Alexander VI, accounts from people like John Winthrop and William Penn with diaries, letters and accounts from the little known and unknown and even a Viking accounts from 1300 of the settlement of Vineland to paint a very full picture of early America from many different perspectives.
Hart the historian give a one or two sentence introduction to each entry that gives a peek at the perspectives of the individual writer and their biases. He includes Royal Proclamations and Indian Treaties but much of what you will read are by ordinary people and tradesmen giving accounts and opinions on topics from the best way to found and manage a colony, to the best way to manage and govern, and almost everything in between. Items running from a few paragraphs to several pages provide a great variety of information and perspectives.
The modern reader will be a tad shocked by defenses of Theocracy and intolerance of religion to the point of execution. One example that leaps out are the laws allowing religious freedom that Hart complements as the an important step, yet those same laws that allowed tolerance of Christianity explication prescribed death to those who denied the divine nature of Christ.
The modern reader will also note the sheer religiousness of the dialogue in even the most humble accounts. The Spanish documents and writers talk mostly about spreading Catholicism, while the Protestant English ascribe almost everything to the will of God. The Dutch writers don't seem to mention religion much excepting for ministers writing about interactions with the Indians.
You will even find a bit of empathy with the current day. One document by a lawyer in Massachusetts bay is prefaced by the fact that he was the first lawyer in the colony and not well received there. Apparently some things never change.
I would recommend not attacking the book as I did; reading it in sequence, the print is small the accounts very dry. Remember the author compiled this in the late 1800's and none of the documents are dated after 1689 they are not easy to read, they can be long hard reading. It took me longer to finish this book than almost anything I've read in years.
As a reference book however it is without peer and gives the most true account of history possible. History is always best when you read what the people actually there say. Professor Hart's gives those people voice centuries after the fact. If you want to build a library on pre-revolution America, this book has to be in it.
